La Fête des Animaux - Summer Toymaking Workshop 8/8/15 in LA

Finger Puppet Workshop August 8.2015 - French General

Babs and I are teaming up again to teach a workshop at French General on August 8, “La Fête des Animaux”. We have an adorable lineup of finger puppets ready for a summer picnic. Styled like vintage storybook characters, these little dressed animals are about 5 inches tall and made from washed wool fabric.

We’ve already done the machine sewing to get things started. We’ll be providing all the patterns, but the workshop will focus on the handwork skills to bring to life five different animals (bunny, duck, piglet, mouse, and bluebird).  Here’s a picture from our work day in Babs’ Petaluma studio:

We’ll start from these pre-sewn bodies, then practice the traditional toymaking techniques to turn the blank beginnings into animal characters.

For a bit more info, see my blog post here.

The workshop fee includes everything you need to complete all five characters as well as patterns and instructions so you can continue to make more after the workshop is over. Also included is a delicious French General lunch. $95.

We’d love to see you there!!!

La Fête des Animaux - Spring Toymaking Workshop 2/28/15 in LA

My old toymaking partner Babs and I are really looking forward to Saturday February 28—we’re joining up once again to teach a dressed animal character workshop at French General from 11-4. It’s going to be a day of creativity and fun, including a famous French General lunch to keep us all fueled for ultimate crafting. Beginners and experienced crafters alike can learn how to work up miniature animals from boiled wool, then dress them in their Springtime best and deck them out with tiny baskets, parasols and pennants. These lovely little creatures will be great additions to Easter baskets and Spring table settings!

Check out the adorable pic Robert Mahar posted on Instagram of the piglet and mouse gent as a wedding couple. (Thanks, Robert!)

Here are the details from the French General site. You need to go to the "Workshops" tab and then find us in the menu on the right:

"Welcome spring with this sweet parade of miniature animal characters. These little dressed animal finger puppets, inspired by the wonderful illustrations in vintage children's books, are about 5 inches tall and made from boiled wool.

Join us and learn the traditional toymaking techniques for five different animals:  bunny, duck, piglet, mouse, and bluebird.  Then the fun begins: dig through our stash of fabrics and trims to dress them up and add accessories like banners, pennant, parasols, and baskets to personalize them.

The workshop fee includes everything you need to complete all five characters as well as patterns and instructions so you can continue to make more after the workshop is over. Also included is a delicious French General lunch. $110."

We’d love to see you there!!!
